Hook, Line & Measure
Hook, Line & Measure is a new citizen science program developed by Council that encourages the community to identify and record the species, size and distribution of fish caught and observed in the Nepean River and other local waterways in the Camden area.
This program helps the community to identify areas for recreational fishing activities and assists Council in collecting baseline data to better understand our waterways and inform the delivery of future waterway projects.
Data collected from this citizen science program will be integrated into national databases including NatureMapr.
The Hook, Line & Measure Competition has now closed!
Thank you to everyone who submitted their sighting or catch. We received over 50 submissions.
This competition helped Council collect valuable fish data and uncover species present in Camden’s waterways. Fish species caught in the Nepean River during the competition included: Australian Bass, invasive European Carp, Mullet, Silver Perch, Freshwater Catfish and Long-fin Eel. Data collected assists Council in gathering baseline data to better understand our waterways and inform the delivery of future waterway projects.
Please continue to enter your sightings or fishing catches below!

Know the rules on fishing in NSW
Freshwater bag and size limits
Bag limits, size limits and gear restrictions apply with fishing. You should familiarise yourself with these rules before fishing. Information is available from your local fisheries office, many bait and tackle stores or NSW Department of Primary Industries.
For freshwater bag and size limits, visit Freshwater bag and size limits (nsw.gov.au)
Recreational Fishing Licence
When fishing in NSW waters, both freshwater and saltwater, you are required by law to pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee and carry a receipt showing the payment of the fee. Payment of the Recreational Fishing Fee can be made online at Recreational fishing | Service NSW
Humane harvesting
Animal care and welfare is important. For guidelines on how to humanely harvest fish and crustaceans, visit Humane harvesting of fish and crustaceans (nsw.gov.au)
Council encourages recreational fishers to humanely dispose of the invasive species European Carp. To keep our waterways free of carp, remember to never release carp into waterways or feed them. If you catch a carp while fishing, you should humanely kill the animal and appropriately dispose of it, rather than returning it to the water. For more information, please refer to the Carp in Camden’s waterways information card.
How to catch and release a fish humanely
Correct handling methods help reduce stress on fish, avoid damage and harm to vital organs, and facilitate healthy release.
Some key steps for responsible catch and release include:
-
Ensure your hands are wet whenever handling a fish;
-
As much as possible, keep the fish submerged in water;
-
When lifting the fish, support its body weight;
-
Plastic lip grips help secure the fish;
-
Enviro nets minimise fish handling; and
-
When measuring the fish, use the measuring mat on the water's edge or submerged in the water.
