Foxes
The European red fox is a widely established pest animal across Greater Sydney and is recognised as a priority pest species under the Greater Sydney Regional Strategic Pest Animal Management Plan (2024–2028).
Within the Camden Local Government Area (LGA), feral foxes occur across rural, peri-urban and bushland environments.
Why are foxes a problem?
Feral foxes are highly adaptable predators that pose significant risks to biodiversity, agriculture and animal welfare. Impacts include:

Predation on native wildlife, particularly small mammals, birds and reptiles;

Impacts on threatened species and ground-nesting birds;
-
Predation on lambs and poultry;
-
Competition with native predators; and
-
Disease transmission risks, including parasites affecting domestic animals.
Foxes can persist at low densities and quickly recolonise areas if control is not coordinated.
What does Council do?
Camden Council’s role includes:

Supporting regional fox management priorities;
-
Working with Greater Sydney Local Land Services;
-
Managing fox impacts on Council-managed land where required; and
-
Supporting education, coordination and reporting.
Council does not undertake fox control on private land but can assist with advice, referrals and coordination.
What can you do?
If foxes are impacting your property or local environment:

Secure poultry, waste and food sources;

Report fox activity in sensitive or high-risk areas;
-
Discuss coordinated control options with neighbours; and
-
Contact Greater Sydney Local Land Services for advice.
Under the Biosecurity Act 2015, all landholders have a General Biosecurity Duty to prevent, eliminate or minimise the risks posed by pest animals, including feral foxes.
