Local streetlights are set for an upgrade after Council partnered with Endeavour Energy to install energy efficient lighting in the Camden area.

The LED Streetlight Replacement program started last month, with inefficient streetlights being replaced with LED lights designed to produce a similar output of light while using less electricity.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli said the project will see more than 50 per cent of the existing street lighting network upgraded.

“Council is dedicated to helping the environment while also looking for ways to save money for our community,” Cr Fedeli said.

“This project is not only expected to save Council and ratepayers millions of dollars on streetlighting operating and maintenance costs in the coming years, but also help Camden achieve its goal of reducing energy use and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

“I’d like to thank Endeavour Energy for working with us and look forward to seeing the new lights across the Camden area.”

The new lights will provide:

  • A more reliable lighting solution with more uniform levels of light;
  • Lower operational and maintenance costs, with savings of $8 million over 20 years; and
  • Environmental benefits saving 2,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.

Andrew Pitman, General Manager Business Services at Endeavour Energy, said that Endeavour Energy is pleased to partner with Camden Council to achieve both environmental and financial benefits for the Camden community.

“The new LED lights are up to 60 per cent more energy efficient. By upgrading 7,200 streetlights to energy efficient LED lighting, Camden Council will save 2,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year – that’s equivalent to taking 950 cars off the road,” said Mr Pitman.

The program started in July this year and is set for completion by the end of the year, weather permitting.
