Get those green thumbs ready for some work in your garden as we celebrate National Tree Day from home this year.

Celebrated on 30 July, National Tree Day has grown to become Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature protection event with an aim of planting one million trees, shrubs and grasses each year.

Due to the latest COVID-19 restrictions, Council’s annual National Tree Day community planting event has been postponed, but residents can still register for the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s (DPIE) free tree giveaway to receive free trees to plant in your own garden and celebrate National Tree Day at home.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said there were still plenty of chances for residents to do their bit within their own properties.

“Camden is set in a beautiful environment and most of us have fantastic gardens which we can continue working on while at home,” Cr Fedeli said.

“Council knows that trees in urban areas have many benefits, providing important shade and local habitat. We are proud to have secured funding to install 2,300 trees in local parks and streets from the NSW Government’s Greening our City program. This includes 1,000 in the first round for street trees, 700 in second round for street and park trees and 500 Camden White Gums at Elizabeth Macarthur Reserve.

“Whether it be planting a new tree or plant of your own or even mulching or tidying up your garden, every little bit counts on National Tree Day.”

Council will advertise the rescheduled National Tree Day and other community planting events once lockdown restrictions ease.
