Camden South Public School year 6 student Tasmai Singh took the reins of Camden Council recently after being named Mayor for a Day.

Tasmai won Council’s annual public speaking competition, which saw 13 Year Six students from across the Camden area compete for the title of Mayor. Oscar Burge from Cobbitty Public School was named Deputy Mayor in the modified online competition this year.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli said she enjoyed hearing how young people envision the future of the Camden area.

“It was fantastic to hear so much enthusiasm about the future of the Camden area and young Tasmai spoke extremely well,” Cr Fedeli said.

“I was very impressed with all the competitors’ speeches and confidence. It is safe to say the future is safe in the hands of these young people.

The speakers were assessed by Cr Fedeli, on their presentation, knowledge of Local Government and the Camden area and their ideas to improve the area.

The competition was part of the Local Government Week celebrations which included a social media campaign on Council’s Facebook page.
