Prepare to be bowled over – work to create Camden’s multi-million-dollar cricket facility on Ferguson’s Land in Camden has begun.
Under the Western Sydney City Deal $8.35 million will be invested to complete Stage 1 of a fantastic new facility or the Camden community. A range of new sporting facilities are being provided through joint investment from the Federal Government, the NSW State Government and Camden Council.
Federal Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction and Member for Hume Angus Taylor said this investment signals to the local community that the COVID-19 recovery has begun and that job opportunities and economic activity will flow from infrastructure projects under the City Deal.
“Investment through the City Deal, is an innovative and fast way that governments can provide economic stimulus to local communities. This project was funded as part of the $190 million Western Parkland City Liveability Program,” Minister Taylor said.
Minister for Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres MP said cricket was a popular local pursuit.
“This is vital capacity for locals to get out for the day and have a bash.
"I’m sure once complete this will be a landmark venue for local residents, and embraced very enthusiastically by the casual player and serious batter/bowlers alike,” Mr Ayres said.
Member for Camden, Peter Sidgreaves MP it was terrific to see the project begin.
“I was delighted to welcome the State and Federal funding for this project last year, in my capacity as Mayor at the time. I can’t wait to see this project come to life. It will be a great addition to our impressive sporting facilities across the Camden area, including our state-of-the-art Narellan Sports Hub.” Mr Sidgreaves said.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the facility will go a long way in servicing one of the country’s fastest growing sports and communities.
“I’m so thrilled we have begun this once in a generation opportunity to create such a game-changing facility right here in Camden. Imagine what this project, when complete, will do for men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ teams in the south west growth corridor. I’d like to thank the Federal and State Governments for their support on this project. Stage One of the project will cost $8.35 million and, in addition to funds allocated as part of Council's draft Delivery Program 2019/20-2022/23, funding from the Western Parkland City Liveability Program and Metropolitan Greenspace Program was also secured,” Cr Fedeli said.
The project will be constructed in a staged process, with Stage One expected to be completed by mid-2021, weather permitting.
This work will include:
- One premium cricket field with turf pitches and picket fencing;
- An amenities block with change rooms and storage;
- Five synthetic training nets; and
- Car parking.
The remaining stages will produce;
- Two additional premier cricket ovals;
- One more turf pitch, with picket fencing;
