About the Project

The project is made up of a number of separate elements, to address the upgrade of Argyle Street and Camden Valley Way, between Camden Town Centre and Narellan Road/The Northern Road.

The Camden Local Government Area (LGA) is one of the fastest growing in Australia with housing, retail and employment developments set to dramatically increase its residential population. At present, the population of Camden stands at approximately 77,000 residents and is set to increase to over 300,000.

Approximately 18,000 vehicles a day currently use Camden Valley Way with a thirty percent increase in traffic predicted by 2040. The planned upgrade will improve levels of transport accessibility in terms of road network operation, journey times, safety and travel reliability for residents, employees and visitors in the area.

The project will achieve the following objectives:

  • Improved traffic flow

  • Improved safety

  • Increased capacity and enhanced efficiency of the road network

  • Increased amenity for local residents, businesses and customers

  • Increased opportunities for local businesses and improved access to shopping precincts

  • Reduction in travel times which will in turn reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions

On 15 December 2014 under the Federal Government's Local Roads Package, funding approvals were awarded for:

  • Camden Town Centre Enhancement Works contribution to traffic facilities

  • Route Strategy Development

  • Macarthur Road Intersection detailed design

On 22 January 2016 under the Federal Government’s Local Roads Package, Round 2 funding approvals were awarded for:

  • Macarthur Road Intersection construction of traffic signals

  • Grahams Hill Road and Richardson Road Intersection detailed design and re-construction of traffic signals

  • Porrende Street concept design between The Northern Road and Grahams Hill Road

Camden Valley Way Route Strategy

The Strategy provides a formal strategic overview of future traffic infrastructure needs between Camden and Narellan, while also providing background information on traffic impacts across the LGA associated with growth and the future airport. An overall LGA wide traffic model has been prepared to identify and quantify future traffic issues. This is being used in particular to model growth impacts on the key Camden Valley Way link between Camden and Narellan, to inform the design of future intersection upgrades along the route.

Macarthur Road Intersection Upgrade

This project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce delays and travel times, and increase the safety and efficiency of the intersection. For more information, please visit the Camden Valley Way/Macarthur Road Intersection Upgrade project page.

Grahams Hill Road / Richardson Road Intersection

This project includes the widening and realignment of lanes at the intersection which will improve road safety, reduce delays and provide better traffic management at the intersection. For more information, please visit the Camden Valley Way/Richardson Road/Grahams Hill Road Intersection Upgrade project page.

Porrende Street

A scoping project will investigate the upgrade of Porrende Street on the approach to The Northern Road including access to the Narellan Sports Hub.

Kirkham Lane and Hilder Street Intersections

Further investigation is being undertaken for these intersections along the corridor. This continues to be progressed by Council in 2018 using funding from Section 94 developer contributions.
