Right to Know Week
Camden Council is proud to support Right to Know Week NSW 2020 (RTK) which takes place this year from 28 September – 4 October 2020.
This year’s theme is Right to Know: Future-proofing information access rights.
Right to Know Week is an important global campaign that aims to raise awareness of each individual’s right of access to government information and promote open, transparent government. This right is underpinned in NSW through the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (also known as the GIPA Act).
The GIPA Act establishes a proactive and open approach to gaining access to government information in New South Wales (NSW). The GIPA Act aims to maintain and advance a system of responsible and representative democratic Government that is open, accountable, fair and effective.
Under the GIPA Act, the community has a right to access NSW government information. The community can obtain information directly from public sector agencies including NSW government departments, councils, universities, state owned corporations and ministerial offices. This includes Camden Council information.
Council has a duty to provide advice and assistance as well as to disclose the types of information they use to provide services and make decisions about services and benefits to the community. Some of this information will be available on Council’s website and free of charge. Other types of information will require an application and may incur a fee.
Camden Council is a proud Champion of Right to Know Week NSW 2020 and recognises the importance of the communities’ rights of access to government information in NSW.
