Youth Participation Public Art Program - Something to Say
BACKGROUND
Council’s Youth Participation Public Art Program began in 2016 as a place making initiative to create a sense of identity and belonging. The objectives of the project are to:
- Support local youth and artist collaboration to create vibrant spaces that improve safety perception and sense of belonging.
- To tell a story and provide opportunities for local artists and youth, whilst fostering diversity in content and supporting capacity and skill building in the community.
- Support new, distinctive, and innovative approaches to expanding Camden’s Youth Public Art.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This is an opportunity for four emerging artists aged 12 to 24 years to work in collaboration with established artists to create a series of works that capture their personal story within their community. Something to Say includes a selection of temporary art installations that will allow youth to exhibit their work, provoke conversation and deliver positive messaging.
- LGA Wide - Display of art within 45 bus shelters with works presented as a double sided, curated exhibition;
- LGA Wide - Small scale mural/pavement art messages delivering positivity and opportunity to reflect on place; and
- Oran Park - A series of ARTangle display boxes delivering a unique platform for the exhibition of works, giving opportunity to young emerging artists in a coordinated exhibition.
The Something to Say project aims to support skill development, guiding youth in the process of:
- Creating a positive visual impact within the community;
- Facilitating self-expression;
- Interacting with other individuals in a constructive way, building teamwork and interpersonal skills; and
- Building work ethic and self-esteem.
