Women in CamdenCouncil aims to foster and enhance participation by all residents in the life of the community and the life of Council. Council is committed to building and maintaining strong links with local women and women's organisations. At the last Census (2006) the total proportion of females in the Camden population was 50.9%. Interestingly, when an analysis of aged groupings within the population is undertaken, the proportion of women increases dramatically in the higher age ranges (over 70yrs). Women (85 yrs +) make up 72.2% of the over 85yrs population. This compares the Sydney Statistical Division in which 63.8% of persons aged 85yrs+ are female. (ABS, 2006). This is reflective of the higher life expectancy experienced by women generally. To view Camden's full Community Profile please click here. Council is currently doing this in the following ways:
Women's issues cross a number of target groups and therefore their needs are considered in many of Council's strategic planning documents. Examples:
International Women's Day - Camden Women's AwardsInternational Women's Day is held on 8 March each year to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women, and to bring attention to the issues that still face women today. Each year Council hosts an event to mark International Women's Day. For the past two years Council has facilitated the ‘Camden Women's Awards' funded through the NSW Premier's Department, Office for Women. The aim of the awards program is to highlight the outstanding achievements of local women from a range of diverse backgrounds living or working within the Camden Local Government Area. Eight categories have been established reflecting the target groups commonly used in community planning. A ‘general community' and ‘community group' category has also been included. This allows nominations of women/groups who may work in a voluntary or paid capacity with any of the target groups.
