Sustainable Schools

Sustainable Schools NSW aims to support all schools, their partners and the community in realising a positive environmental vision. Through a School Environmental Management Plan, your school community can implement, review and celebrate sustainability education initiatives.

The Sustainable Schools NSW site has been developed for teachers, principals, students, school communities and other organisations that support schools.

Sustainable Schools NSW is an initiative jointly managed by two NSW government agencies, the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW and

NSW Department of Education and Training. Together with a range of other government, educational and community groups the Sustainable School Initiative is achieving a wide range of sustainability education objectives.

Macarthur Sustainable Schools Expo

It's on again! The 2008 Macarthur Sustainable Schools EXPO will take place on Wednesday 17 September at Belgenny Farm, Camden. Open to all schools in the Macarthur Region last year's EXPO attracted over 200 students and teachers. It was such a success that other regions around the state are now wanting to hold their own EXPOs.

This year's EXPO is shaping up to be even bigger and better in a new and exciting location. Students and teachers will once again come together to showcase their environmental activities, celebrate achievements and share experiences with their peers through displays, demonstrations and discussion. Learn about topics such as plant propagation, composting, energy use, vegetable gardening and more. We invite all schools in the Macarthur Region to participate in this exciting initiative.

Feedback from previous years participants has been very positive with comments such as the following provided by teachers.

"We've had an awesome day today. We've learnt about all of these great ideas that I can take back to my school and pass onto my children, so it's been really really good."

"It makes children take hold of their own environment rather than adults always being the driving force."

"I brought some children along here today to learn about environmental education. We learnt about a lot of good things, which are happening in schools around the district, and I'm very proud of the district for that reason. There are lots of good things happening. The children can do such a lot just by starting off in a small way doing one small job."

"It's been fantastic, there's been so many fantastic ideas that can be incorporated straight into student's learning. The good thing about it is that students take responsibility for their own learning, and we're linking it to the local environment."

The idea for the EXPO came from the Macarthur Sustainable Schools Network. The Network consists of principals and teachers from local schools; representatives from the Department of Education and Training; Officers from Camden, Campbelltown and Wollondilly Councils; and the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living. The objectives of the EXPO are to:

• Encourage and enhance the development and implementation of Environmental Management Plans in schools
• Share ideas amongst teachers and students
• Encourage the formation of primary and high school links
• Establish better community links
