Flood Information

The Nepean River, South Creek, tributaries thereof and associated floodplains are a predominant feature of the Camden Local Government Area. Flooding along these waterways impacts upon properties within the floodplain to varying degrees.

General information with respect to flooding can be obtained from Council’s Engineering Section; flooding maps are also available for inspection by the public.

Detailed flood information relevant to specific properties can also be obtained by downloading the Flood Information Application Form below and mailing the completed form to Council with the applicable fee. Your request will be replied to promptly.

Upper South Creek Catchment

Flood Study (2011) and Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan

The State Government requires that Council's undertake periodic review of flood studies, particularly when urbanisation and land use trends are changing. As the Upper South Creek Catchment is located within the South West Growth Centre and will experience significant redevelopment in the upcoming years, Council engaged WMAWater who is a specialist consultant in floodplain management to review and update the flood study. The Revised Flood Study was adopted by Council on 8 November 2011.

Until November 2011, Camden Council applied Flood Study of South Creek prepared by the Department of Water Resources in 1991 for flood levels. The results of the new Flood Study are different to the previous flood study. The changes are primarily due to:

  • The inclusion of minor water courses that were excluded in the previous 1991 study.
  • Advanced technology (Aerial Laser Survey and two dimensional flood modelling were used in the flood study)
  • The inclusion of blockage allowances in the calculations

For your information the following documents are available in this website. Please follow the appropriate links to access them.

The adopted Flood Study Report excluding figures and appendices. Please note that the full study report with figures and appendices and flood maps are available at Council offices and libraries at Camden and Narellan.

  • Flood Maps with 1%, 5% AEP and PMF flood extents

Having completed the initial flood study, the next step of the Floodplain Risk Management Process is to undertake the Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan (FRMS&P) as required by the State Government. The purpose of this is to consider issues resulting from the Flood Study and examine potential options for reducing flooding and flooding impacts. Council has engaged a specialist consultant, Cardno to undertake the FRMS&P for Upper South Creek Catchment based on the Revised Flood Study (2011).

The FRMS&P is conducted in consultation with the Camden Council's Floodplain Risk Management Committee formed recently. The committee is made up of representatives from Council, Community and state agency specialists.

Council together with Cardno conducted a community survey in September 2012 in relation to floodplain risk management options and flooding experience. The results of the survey will be displayed in Council's website and libraries and customer service centres of Narellan and Camden from February for a month.

The revised Flood Study (2011) is currently being updated to include the South West Growth Centre development under the FRMS&P. Draft Interim Flood Planning Controls are being prepared by Cardno for the review of Council and the Committee. After the review, the Interim Flood Planning Controls will be placed for public exhibition for a month before adopted by the Council. The public exhibition of Interim Flood Planning Controls are tentatively planned to commence from February/March.

If you need further information on this matter please contact Council's Stormwater and Floodplain Engineer on 4645 5091 between 10am - 12pm, Monday to Friday.
