Domestic Collection

This section includes information on the Domestic Waste Services:

Camden Council’s 3 Bin System

Camden Council provides a two or three bin waste management system to its residents. The three bin service is available to all urban residential properties and is designed to minimise the amount of resources going to landfill. It consists of a Recycling bin, a Greenwaste bin, and a General Waste Bin.

Note: At some rural properties, only the recycling and garbage bins are available as greenwaste can be disposed of on-site.

All of the three bins are collected weekly. Bins must be placed on the kerbside with the lid opening to the road. There must be a gap of at least 30cm between the bins, and no obstruction from light poles, trees or parked cars. Bear in mind that the size of the garbage trucks means they need a lot of room to move.

Council also provides a booking service for the Kerbside Cleanup of bulky household waste collection.

General Garbage Service

In order to make the most of the resources we have, disposing of waste to garbage should be our last resort. Therefore, to allow for those residence in our community who produce less waster a range of bin sizes are available.

These are 80 Litre, 120 Litre and 240 Litre bins.

Having a smaller bin is not only good for the environment, it will save you money! The cost of a garbage service varies according to the size of the bin, and whether the property is in a rural or urban area.

Follow this link to the Camden Council Fees and Charges, and see for yourself!

A rule of thumb to help you minimise the garbage you produce is to “Avoid, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”.

Avoid: try not to purchase or use something if you do not have to, especially if it cannot be reused or recycled.

Reduce: reduce the amount you purchase or use.

Reuse: when you have finished with a product, see whether it can be used again for the same or a different purpose.

Recycle: make the product available for recycling. Use your yellow and blue bin or the brown bin; whichever is suitable.

and finally....

Dispose: it should only be after these steps that you need to put anything into the red bin.

Imagine how much space in landfill you could save by avoiding, reducing, reusing and recycling!

Recycling Service

The recycling bin is a spilt bin with clean paper and cardboard collected on one side (blue lid) and clean food and drink containers collected on the other side (yellow lid). These materials are then used to make new products.

News Flash! New ALL-YELLOW recycling bins.

Read what this means for you…

As a reflection of changes at Jacks Gully Waste & Recycling Centre, Council is now able to collect and drop off full co-mingled recycling materials – paper, cardboard and recyclable containers together.  As such the recycling bin and collection system is slowly undergoing some changes. Council has purchased new undivided recycling trucks that are painted all yellow at the back rather than the usual yellow and blue. Bins will also be changing, first with the removal of dividers, then with the introduction of yellow lids.

At this stage residents are requested to continue with the current arrangement of separating materials into the split recycling bin.

Any change to the service will be transitional, with residents individually notified and informed of how to use a new undivided bin as they arrive. Replacement and repairs to current recycling bins will still occur until existing stocks have been exhausted. Broken dividers will be removed but not replaced, however they may still have a two-tone lid. Undivided bins can accept both paper and cardboard and bottles and containers etc in the one section.

There will be no change to the material types that can be recycled.

Some bins have a blue and yellow lid, but no divider. These people only are now able to put paper and cardboard and containers all in the bin together.

Waste Guidelines

Please be aware that bins heavier than 80kg cannot be serviced. Dry materials weigh less than wet, so avoid putting wet grass clippings into the bin.

Handy Hints

  • To avoid grass clippings and leaf litter sticking to the bottom of the greenwaste bin, place some twigs and sticks into the base of the bin before emptying in the grass clippings. Otherwise, place greenwaste materials in the bin just prior to your collection day.
  • Wrap the fruit and vegetable scraps in newspaper to help keep your bin free of insects or fruit fly.
